Domino // Spring 2015

Since childhood, Bellin has had an affinity for all things creative. “I grew up around painters, writers, and musicians,” she recalls of her Houston upbringing. “The city has a vital cultural scene, which encouraged my love of art from a young age.” After moving to New York City and working at Harper’s Bazaar and Acquavella Galleries, Bellin launched her namesake art consultation firm in 2011. Today, she helps curate growing collections and connects up-and-coming artists with buyers. “My goal is to integrate paintings and sculptures into the lives of my clients,” Bellin says, “not as decoration but as touchstones for their families.

Madre Is Now Open on West Lovers Lane

I’ve been anticipating the opening of children’s interior store Madre since I “liked” one of their first Instagram posts. The pictures of playful interiors mixed with a Palm Beach vibe got me excited for what was to come....One of the items I’m most excited about is the art selection. Art for children’s rooms that is age-appropriate but not cheesy or mass produced is hard to find. The trio is working with art consultant Kate Bellin of Kate Bellin Contemporary out of New York. They’ve sourced artist and illustrator Catlin McGauley’s pieces for the store. Caitlin’s clients include Domino, Hermès, and Kate Spade New York. You can also find works from photographer Gray Malin and artist Kate Schelter.

With expertise gained while obtaining degrees at Princeton and Christie's, researching the catalogue raisonné of Jasper Johns's paintings and sculptures, and as the accessories editor of Harper's Bazaar, Bellin now assists her clients in building their own personal art collections. This week, she talks fashion, cronuts, and Rauschenberg with Domino. READ MORE

ALEXANDRA: Art is very intimidating to some - can you talk about your approach with clients specifically those new to art collecting on a small budget?

KATE: No matter what their budget, I always tell my clients only to buy things that have meaning to them. This meaning can reside in the pictorial content of the art, or in a childhood connection to the style (for example, one may have grown up in a house with abstract paintings and may be drawn to those). But usually, it has to be cultivated by me and by the client: see a piece of art that you like, then learn about the artist, see more pieces by that artist, spend time with the artist at his studio, meet the artist's friends, know the other artists at this artist's gallery, etc. This type of educating is a large part, and one of the most fun parts, of my job.
